Wand of Whispers and Secrets

Wondrous Item (Wand), rare (requires attunement)

This slender wand, crafted from the wood of a long-forgotten tree, is adorned with intricate carvings of eyes and ears that seem to shift and listen. When held, it emanates a faint whispering sound, as if secrets are tumbling from the very air around it.

While attuned to this wand, you gain the ability to cast the Detect Thoughts spell at will, without expending a spell slot. Additionally, you can spend an action to target a creature that you can see within 30 feet of you and use the wand to extract a single secret from their mind. The creature must succeed on a Wisdom saving throw against your spell save DC or reveal a secret of their choice—something they would not normally share, which must be a character secret or detail. The secret is then written in the air in shimmering letters for you to read before fading away.

Once you use this feature, you cannot do so again until you finish a long rest. However, each time you extract a secret, the wand whispers a faint warning to you about the moral implications of your inquiry, imposing disadvantage on any Insight checks you make until your next long rest.

Moreover, when you cast any spell from the wand, there is a 10% chance that the wand may act unpredictably. Roll a d20: on a roll of 1-2, a random creature within 30 feet of you (not including yourself) becomes aware of a secret from their own past they have tried to forget, which imposes disadvantage on their saving throws for the next minute. This effect can create tension within the party or heighten the drama, enhancing the roleplay experience.

The wand can also be used as a spellcasting focus, allowing you to channel spells with a subtext of intrigue and deception, further enriching your spellcasting arsenal with an air of mystery.
