The party finds themselves within the Stitched Spire, a decrepit tower that was once the lair of Baelthyn the Weaver, a renowned artisan and feared sorceress who wove magical tapestries that could change the very fabric of time and fate. As they enter the crumbling structure, the scent of musty fabric and a low hum of magical energy fills the air. The walls are adorned with partially destroyed tapestries depicting historical events, each thread shimmering with faint magic. A large loom stands at the center of an expansive room, its wooden frame contorted and covered in cobwebs, while residual threads crawl along the floor like creeping creatures.

The tower now serves as a prison of sorts, trapping the lost souls of adventurers and townsfolk who fell victim to Baelthyn’s ambition. The party’s goal is to retrieve the Tapestry of Whispers, a legendary artifact rumored to hold the secret to battling an encroaching darkness that threatens their realm.

The Prelude: Infiltration

As the players explore the Spire, they'll need to navigate through several well-crafted traps and magical phenomena:

Trap: The Sticky Fibers

In the corridor leading to the loom room, the players encounter floor-level threads that seem innocuous but agitate when stepped on. Players must succeed on a Dexterity saving throw (DC 14) to avoid being ensnared. If caught, they must make Strength checks to break free, with the threads constricting them, making movement impossible. Meanwhile, the threads hum with energy, causing minor psychic damage (1d4) to anyone ensnared, representing their efforts to break free.

Puzzle: The Tapestry of Memories

Upon nearing the loom room, the players discover a massive, damaged tapestry that depicts significant historical events throughout their world. Interpreting the images is essential for opening the way to the loom. They must solve a riddle based on these images. If they correctly identify five key moments from the tapestry (e.g., a great battle, a king's coronation, an ancient defeat), the threads begin to glow and write the words "YOU MAY ENTER" in the air, overriding the magical essence of the loom that is resolving events against them.

Confrontation: The Weaver and Her Acolytes

Once past the tapestry puzzle, the party enters the loom room where Baelthyn begins her intricate weaving. She notices the intruders and the atmosphere shifts, crackling with energy. As she invokes her magic, the Wraith-Spun Acolytes manifest around her, ready to defend their mistress.

Baelthyn will taunt the players, suggesting that their fates are already woven into her tapestry, providing a sense of urgency and personal stakes. She’ll focus on isolating characters from the party, using her scissors to cut their ties in combat.

Combat Mechanics

  • Baelthyn’s Actions:

    • Scissors of Fate: A melee attack dealing 2d8 slashing damage. If the attack hits, the victim must make a Wisdom saving throw (DC 15) or become frightened until the end of their next turn.
    • Unravel Threads: A spell that targets one character, forcing them to roll a d6; on a 1-3, they take 3d6 psychic damage and are unable to gain advantage on any rolls for one turn.
    • Weaving Resistance: Baelthyn can redirect one attack aimed at her to an Allied Wraith-Spun Acolyte. Any direct damage reduces her hit points by the same amount.
  • Wraith-Spun Acolytes’ Actions:

    • The Acolytes can target players with Bind Thread, causing them to make a Strength saving throw (DC 14) to avoid being restrained.
    • Additionally, they can weave a Protective Thread, providing temporary hit points to any Acolyte in combat.

The battle will take place amongst the loom's rotating mechanisms and active magical currents. The environment will play a crucial role; players can attempt checks to manipulate the loom’s gears to their advantage (e.g., reversing the rotation to cause a section of it to try and trap the Acolytes within) or use the remnants of the tapestries to hide themselves temporarily.

Resolution: A Tapestry Revealed

Upon defeating Baelthyn, her form dissipates into threads of light, leaving the loom vulnerable. The remaining Acolytes, freed from her control upon her death, have a moment of clarity. They remain confused but are no longer hostile. The leader, a Wraith-Spun Acolyte who once was a town elder, approaches the party with reluctance.

Using your skill checks and charm, players can persuade the Acolyte to tell them of the Tapestry of Whispers. The elder reveals that the tapestry lies within the loom and, with Baelthyn gone, its protection is undone. Players can search the loom for the tapestry by passing an Intelligence (Investigation) check (DC 16).

Aftermath

As the players unveil the Tapestry of Whispers, spectral threads reform and briefly reveal essential secrets about their pasts, giving insights that can aid their future quests beyond this encounter. Each player receives a boon tied deeply to their story and how they can alter their future (granting advantage on their next major decision or combat encounter).

The Spire begins to groan and tremble from its loss of magical protection. The party must escape swiftly through the collapsing corridors, dodging falling debris and unraveling traps once set by Baelthyn.
