Veil of the Whispering Spirits

Wondrous Item (Veil), rare (requires attunement)

This delicate veil, crafted from a shimmering gossamer thread, emanates an ethereal glow and flutters softly as if caressed by unseen hands. When worn, the veil shifts colors subtly, reflecting the mood of its wearer, often becoming a soft white when its user feels peaceful or a deep shadowy hue when anxious or afraid.

While attuned to this veil, you gain the ability to commune with spirits that linger in the ethereal plane. Once per long rest, you can use an action to cast Speak with Dead without expending a spell slot, allowing you to ask up to five questions of a corpse. When using this ability, the spirit often provides cryptic yet revealing answers, tinged with whispers of the past that not only give insight but may also offer warnings of dangers ahead.

Moreover, while wearing this veil, you have advantage on saving throws against being frightened, as the whispers of spirits bolster your courage. In addition, you can use the veil to enhance your stealth. As a bonus action, you can cloak yourself in the veil's magic, becoming invisible until the start of your next turn or until you make an attack. This ability can be used three times, regaining all expended uses on a long rest.

However, the veil carries a cost. Each time you commune with a spirit using the veil’s power, there is a cumulative 10% chance that the restless spirit will attach itself to you. If this occurs, you will be haunted by haunting whispers at inopportune moments, creating disadvantage on Wisdom saving throws. The spirit can be expelled by performing a special ritual during a long rest, requiring a DC 15 charisma check. Failure means the spirit lingers until the next communal attempt or until you find a means to properly lay it to rest.

This veil serves as a powerful conduit to the voices from beyond, offering both knowledge and a reminder of the cycle of life and death that surrounds the living. Use its powers wisely, for every whisper from the veil may reveal secrets, but it may also call forth echoes that long for peace.
