Veil of the Whispering Shadows

Wondrous Item (Cloak), rare (requires attunement)

Crafted from the finest nocturnal silks, this cloak shimmers with an iridescent pattern that seems to ripple like shadows in candlelight. While wearing it, you feel an uncanny connection to the unseen realm of whispers and shadows, as if you can almost hear the sounds that lie beyond the veil of reality.

The wearer can use a bonus action to activate the cloak's powers, gaining the following benefits for up to 10 minutes:

  • Ethereal Step: You can shift through the material plane and become incorporeal for a brief moment. Once per short rest, you can use this ability to move through objects and creatures as if they weren’t there. You cannot end your movement inside an object, and if you do, you take 2d6 force damage and are pushed to the nearest unoccupied space.

  • Whispers of the Fallen: Once per long rest, you can hear the whispers of the dead and draw upon their knowledge. You can cast the Speak with Dead spell without expending a spell slot. Additionally, after using this ability, you gain advantage on one Intelligence (History) or Wisdom (Insight) check related to the knowledge gained from the whispers.

  • Shadow's Embrace: The cloak grants you advantage on Dexterity (Stealth) checks while in dim light or darkness. If you succeed on a Stealth check while shrouded in the cloak, you become invisible until the end of your next turn or until you attack, cast a spell, or forcefully end the invisibility.

However, the connection to whispers comes at a risk. Each time you use either the Ethereal Step or Whispers of the Fallen, roll a d20. On a roll of 1, you draw the attention of a shadowy entity from a distant realm, causing you to become frightened until the end of your next turn as it manifests briefly in your vision.

The cloak can forge bonds with those who dare to listen, but it also reminds them that the shadows have ears of their own.
