Veil of the Forgotten Shadows

Wondrous Item (Veil), rare (requires attunement

This ethereal, swirling fabric appears almost amorphous, shifting between shades of deep blue and black. When worn, the veil wraps around the contours of the wearer’s face, creating an illusion that makes them appear to fade into their surroundings. While donning this item, the wearer gains advantage on Dexterity (Stealth) checks made to hide, as well as a +2 bonus to their AC against ranged attacks.

However, the veil's true power unfolds when the wearer invokes its abilities. By spending a bonus action and expending one use of the veil's magic, the wearer can surround themselves in shadowy mist for up to one minute, becoming invisible from plain sight. Participating in any active combat or casting a spell while under the effects of this ability will break the invisibility, but the wearer remains obscured within the mist itself, allowing for continued concealment.

Once used, this ability cannot be activated again until the wearer finishes a short or long rest. Furthermore, the wearer can choose to tap into the veil's forgotten secrets. As an action, they may utter a whispered phrase to conjure shadowy tendrils from the array. Each tendril can reach out to grasp an enemy within 30 feet, forcing them to make a Dexterity saving throw (DC 15) or be restrained until the end of their next turn. This feature may be used three times, after which the item requires a long rest to regain the uses.

While the veil grants significant advantages, it carries with it a notable risk. The whispers lurking within it occasionally tempt the wearer to embrace darker choices, wherein the GM may call for a Wisdom saving throw (DC 13) whenever they use one of its abilities. Failure results in the wearer becoming momentarily overwhelmed by visions of forgotten horrors, imposing disadvantage on their next attack roll or skill check. This adds an intriguing element of risk versus reward, enhancing the engagement during each session.
