Draped in tattered, ethereal shrouds that seem to fade into the air itself, this creature moves silently, gliding rather than walking. A seamless blend of shadows and whispers, its form occasionally flickers, exposing a glimpse of a sorrowful visage etched with countless experiences and unfulfilled yearnings. Eyes glimmer like distant stars, but they emanate an unsettling sadness, as if each one harbors the combined memory of forgotten souls. This being thrives on lost thoughts and hidden secrets, using its unnerving presence to unravel the fabric of its foes' minds, drawing them into a cacophony of murmurs filled with despair. Innate Spellcasting. The creature's spellcasting ability is Charisma (spell save DC 16). It can innately cast the following spells, requiring no material components:
- At will: disguise self, minor illusion
- 3/day each: fear, silence, vampiric touch
- 1/day each: confusion, detect thoughts
Whispers of the Forgotten. As a bonus action, the creature can choose a target within 60 feet that it can see. The target must succeed on a DC 16 Wisdom saving throw or become incapacitated until the end of its next turn as it hears the mournful whispers of lost memories flooding its mind.
Stolen Memories. When the creature hits with a melee attack, it can choose to deal an additional 13 (3d8) psychic damage. If the target is reduced to 0 hit points by this attack, the creature steals one memory of the target's choice, causing the target to lose proficiency in one skill, tool, or saving throw (chosen by the GM) until the target completes a long rest.
Ethereal Reprisal. If the creature drops to 0 hit points, it vanishes instead of dying. At the start of its next turn, it reappears in an unoccupied space within 60 feet with half its hit points.
Actions
Multiattack. The creature makes two attacks or casts a spell.
Memory Drain. Melee Spell Attack: +8 to hit, reach 5 ft., one creature. Hit: 22 (4d8 + 4) necrotic damage, and the target must succeed on a DC 16 Constitution saving throw or have its hit point maximum reduced by an amount equal to the damage taken. This reduction lasts until the target finishes a long rest.
Dreadful Resonance (Recharge 5-6). The creature emits a haunting resonance in a 30-foot radius. Each creature in that area must make a DC 16 Wisdom saving throw. On a failed save, a creature takes 36 (8d8) psychic damage and is frightened until the end of its next turn. On a successful save, it takes half as much damage and isn't frightened.
