Phantom Veil of Ethereal Whispers
Wondrous Item (Cloak), rare (requires attunement)
This ethereal cloak appears to ripple as if it were woven from the very fabric of shadows and whispers. The cloak is made of a translucent material that shimmers with a hint of ghostly light, often appearing to be slightly out of phase with the world around it. When worn, it drapes elegantly over the wearer’s shoulders, trailing behind like tendrils of mist.
While wearing this cloak, you gain the following benefits:
-
Ethereal Drift: As a bonus action, you can activate the cloak to become incorporeal, allowing you to move through solid objects and creatures as if they were difficult terrain for up to 10 feet. You must end your turn in an unoccupied space. This effect can be used once per short rest.
-
Whispers of the Past: The cloak grants you the ability to communicate with spirits. Once per long rest, you can cast the Speak with Dead spell without using a spell slot or requiring material components. When you do so, you hear whispers from nearby spirits that provide hints or clues related to your immediate surroundings.
-
Veil of Secrets: When you are targeted by an attack, you can use your reaction to allow the cloak to absorb some of that energy. Roll a d6 and reduce the damage dealt by the result. This ability can be used a number of times equal to your proficiency bonus and regains all expended uses after a long rest.
While attuned to this cloak, you feel a heightened sense of awareness; strange echoes and faint murmurs seem to guide your decisions, leading you toward hidden secrets and forgotten paths. However, the sustained exposure to these whispers can become overwhelming, potentially leading to fleeting moments of distraction. At the end of each long rest, roll a d20. On a roll of 1, you have disadvantage on your next saving throw against being frightened or charmed, as the voices pull at your focus.
The cloak is a favored garment of those who tread the line between the living and the dead, ideal for rogues, sorcerers, or any adventurer willing to harness the knowledge of spirits for the sake of their quest.
