*Obsidian Threads: Tangle of the Darkened Weave*
Setting the Scene
The adventure begins in the shadowy expanse of the Looming Void Forest, an ancient wood infused with dark magic and inhabited by weaving specters that guard profound secrets. Long ago, a cabal of sorcerers known as the Obsidian Thread Weavers created a powerful artifact known as the Loom of Shadows, said to grant dominion over fate and reality. However, the artifact was lost when the Weavers vanished under mysterious circumstances, and it has since become an object of fabled lore.
You find yourselves on a quest to locate the Loom of Shadows, as whispers in the nearby village of Eldergrove suggest that the balance of nature is being disrupted by the emerging power of the Loom. Villagers complain of strange occurrences: crops dying overnight, animals acting erratically, and shadows coming alive. Your goal is to retrieve the Loom and restore stability to the region.
As you venture under the colossal branches entwined with shadows, the very air crackles with arcane energy. A path shrouded in mist stretches ahead, leading to a dilapidated ruin emanating a dark, ethereal glow at its core. Yet, be warned: the Loom of Shadows is guarded by formidable creatures and intricate traps designed to ensnare the unworthy.
The Darkened Ruins
As you progress deeper into the forest, a colossal archway formed from twisted branches leads you to the crumbling remains of the Obsidian Thread Sanctum. A once-grand hall now lies in disarray, draped with dark weavings that pulse like a heartbeat. The temperature drops as you enter, and an eerie silence envelops you. Floating motes of light illuminate the chambers intermittently, revealing arcane symbols etched into the stone walls.
Exploration and Traps
-
The Threaded Path: As you move forward, you must navigate a narrow corridor lined with spectral threads that vibrate lightly. To avoid being ensnared, players must make successful Dexterity saving throws (DC 15) to pass through the threads without alerting the specters that guard them. Failing the throw triggers an alarm that summons two Shadow Wraiths (see Monster Encounters for details).
-
Illusory Labyrinth: Beyond the corridor lies an illusory maze that shifts as you navigate through it. Players must succeed on a DC 16 Intelligence (Investigation) check to discern the true nature of the path while facing hallucinations of lurking horrors. If they fail, they become disoriented, resulting in exhaustion until they find a way out of the illusion.
Monster Encounters
As you delve deeper into the sanctum, be prepared to confront the enchantments that protect the Loom of Shadows:
-
Shadow Wraiths (2-3): Shadow Wraiths are malevolent spirits adorned with woven cloaks made of dark threads. For every time a character touches a specter thread, the Wraiths gain advantage on their melee attacks. They teleport around the battlefield, targeting weaker characters or those who stray too far from the party.
-
Obsidian Enforcers (1-2): These hulking constructs made from obsidian and strands of living shadow emerge as sentinels to protect their domain. Each Enforcer wields a blade of dark energy that deals both slashing and necrotic damage. Their special attack, "Shadow Chain," can entangle players, forcing them to undertake strength checks (DC 15) to escape once caught.
The Loom of Shadows
Eventually, after surviving the traps and defeating the guardians, you enter a large chamber dominated by an ancient circular Loom of Shadows, exuding an intoxicating aura of both despair and longing. An ethereal figure materializes within the Loom's web, the last remnant of the Obsidian Thread Weavers, named Kaeloth, a shade who cannot leave the Loom while bound to it.
The Confrontation
Kaeloth’s presence is magnetic yet foreboding; he pleads with you for aid, explaining that the Loom can warp reality and it is critical to put it to rest. He warns that using the Loom improperly could bring devastating results. However, creatures from twisted realities are also drawn to it, seeking to harness its power for their own nefarious purposes.
Suddenly, as the conversation unfolds, two Thread Fiends (horrifying entities formed from twisted shadows) materialize to claim the Loom for themselves. As they enter, the chamber darkens, and the temperature drops, bringing with it waves of despair that sap your resolve.
Battle Mechanics
-
Mana Strands: As the battle ensues, the Loom releases bursts of arcane energy in the form of Mana Strands. Each round, players can choose to manipulate these strands to restore a spell slot or gain advantage on the next attack roll. They must roll a d6 to determine how many strands they can manipulate, and the effects vary (GMs may create a list of possible outcomes).
-
Environmental Effects: The room pulsates with dark magic, creating barriers and shifting shadows that antagonize players:
- Every round, players must succeed on a Wisdom saving throw (DC 14) to avoid being frightened for the turn as sinister whispers claw at their minds.
- Players may find opportunities to gain cover behind collapsing columns or pulsing orbs of shadow, granting them advantages against the Wraiths and Fiends.
-
Kaeloth's Aid: While Kaeloth can assist the players using limited abilities like providing cover or revealing hidden foes, he is bound to the Loom and can only act once every three rounds, generating a sense of urgency in defeating the Thread Fiends.
Resolution: Choices and Consequences
Upon successfully vanquishing the Thread Fiends, the Loom falls silent. Kaeloth informs you that its preservation poses a risk, yet destroying it could unravel the very fabric of fate. Here, the players face a moral dilemma with critical choices:
-
Preserve the Loom: By attuning to it, Kaeloth offers guardianship, promising to safeguard its power. The party must remain vigilant against future threats seeking to misuse it, but the natural balance in Eldergrove is restored for now.
-
Destroy the Loom: In an explosive gesture, players can opt to shatter the Loom, dispersing the dark energy across the forest. Although nature might initially retaliate, it ultimately restores itself over time, allowing villagers to reclaim their lands.
Upon making their choice, a blinding flash occurs, revealing the path back to the village, now awash in light. You feel the gravity of your decision reverberate through the roots of the trees around you. You emerge with a powerful tale of heroism, knowing both the cost of wielding fate and the price of balance. Your adventures in the Looming Void Forest come to a close, but the legacy of the Loom of Shadows and its enchantments do not fade as easily.
