Locket of Perpetual Whispers
Wondrous Item (Locket), rare (requires attunement)
This delicate silver locket is intricately engraved with swirling patterns of sound waves, and it radiates a soft, enchanting glow. When opened, it reveals a small, shimmering crystal that pulses with a heartbeat-like rhythm. The locket is said to contain the captured whispers of long-forgotten souls, granting the wearer unique insights and abilities.
While attuned to the locket, you gain the following benefits:
-
Voices of the Past: Once per long rest, you can open the locket to ask a single question concerning your current quest or situation. The locket responds with whispers that provide cryptic advice or hints, offering advantage on your next Intelligence or Wisdom check related to that question.
-
Echoing Wards: As a reaction to being targeted by an attack, you can activate the locket to create a shimmering barrier of sound. For that attack, you gain a +2 bonus to your AC, provided you can hear the attack being made. If the attack misses, the attacker takes 1d6 psychic damage, as they hear voices of their own past taunting them.
-
Whispering Echo: When you cast a spell, you can manipulate the sound of your voice. Choose one creature within 30 feet of you. They must make a Wisdom saving throw against your spell save DC. On a failed save, they have disadvantage on saving throws against the next spell you cast before the end of your next turn.
The locket has a dark side as well. If worn for more than a week without a long rest where you take time to listen to the whispers and reflect, you must make a DC 15 Wisdom saving throw. On a failure, you become haunted by fleeting whispers, imposing disadvantage on saving throws against being frightened until you complete a long rest in a safe environment.
Legends speak of its creation by a forgotten seer who could weave echoes of fate into reality, and though it holds incredible power, it also bears the sorrow of countless souls. Use it wisely, and take care that it does not consume you with the weight of its whispers.
