Locket of Echoed Whispers

Wondrous Item (Locket), rare (requires attunement)

This delicate silver locket is intricately designed with swirling patterns and tiny gemstones that shimmer in hues of blue and violet. When opened, it reveals a small, polished mirror within, and a soft, almost inaudible hum emanates from it. The locket has the ability to capture and replay whispers of information and insight shared nearby.

While wearing the locket, you can use a bonus action to intake whispers. Choose one creature within 30 feet that you can hear, and the locket records the last few moments of their conversation; this effect functions once per short rest. The player can replay the recorded whispers as an action. The whispers convey the last 20 seconds of conversation in the creature’s voice, which can be useful for gathering intelligence or mimicking others.

Additionally, once per long rest, you can invoke the locket to cast Suggestion (spell save DC 15) as a 3rd-level spell without expending a spell slot, using the locket’s own whispers to influence the target's mind. The target hears echoes of voices suggesting the course of action.

Special limitations arise with its use: over-reliance or misuse of the locket can create dissonance in the wearer’s mind. If you call upon its powers more than once in a single day, you must succeed on a DC 13 Wisdom saving throw or suffer from anxiety, imposing disadvantage on Wisdom saving throws and ability checks until you finish a short or long rest.

The locket's true potential, however, lies in the secrets it holds. If the wearer manages to record four distinct pieces of crucial information (such as knowledge about the history of a location, secrets of a powerful foe, or hints about a treacherous plot), the locket will reveal its deeper ability: you can cast Divination, as the locket channels the energy of the recorded whispers to answer your inquiry with uncanny accuracy.
