Gleaming Compass of Celestial Navigation

Wondrous Item (Artifact), rare (requires attunement)

This exquisite compass is fashioned from intricate silver filigree, with a luminous glass face that shimmers like starlight. In the center, a delicate needle dances gracefully, always pointing towards the location of the nearest celestial body rather than magnetic north. When held, it feels as if the compass somehow hums with the energy of the cosmos itself.

While attuned to the item, you gain several benefits:

  1. Stellar Guidance: Once per long rest, you can expend a charge to cast guidance at will, as if you were concentrating on a spell. This allows you to assist an ally by providing them with a d4 to add to their ability check.

  2. Path of Stars: When you are lost, or need to traverse difficult terrain, you can use the compass to instead allow you to walk a line drawn by the stars. You and up to five willing creatures can ignore difficult terrain for one hour. After this effect ends, the compass loses its glow until the next dawn.

  3. Celestial Allies: Once per long rest, as a bonus action, you can invoke the compass to summon a shimmering astral projection of a celestial being of your choice that fits within a CR of 2 or less (like a unicorn or a satyr) for one hour. The creature is friendly to you and your allies, and will aid you in combat, following your commands as best as it can.

  4. Guided by the Cosmos: While holding the compass, you have advantage on Wisdom (Survival) checks made to navigate or track celestial phenomena, and you cannot become lost in the wilderness or while sailing.

The compass also has a minor flaw; overuse can attract the attention of otherworldly entities. Each time you use the summoning feature, there is a 10% chance that the energy might attract a celestial being who may appear and wish to engage you in a conversation or challenge, leaving your party to decide whether to comply or resist. Be mindful of your celestial connections—they can lead to both great fortune and unforeseen consequences.
