Ethereal Compass of Lost Horizons

Wondrous Item (Artifact), rare (requires attunement)

This elegantly crafted compass is encased in an intricate brass frame, with a glass face through which a swirling mist can be seen. The needle, instead of pointing to magnetic north, glows faintly and will rotate wildly when in the presence of lost or hidden locations, leading its bearer toward places lost to history or the fabric of reality itself.

When you attune to the compass, it grants you the ability to cast the spell Locate Object once per long rest without expending a spell slot. Additionally, when you find a unique location (a forgotten ruin, hidden chamber, or an entrance to the Feywild), the compass can guide you directly to it. The bearer must succeed on a DC 15 Wisdom saving throw to discern ancient, buried locations or those that have shifted into other realms.

Once per day, when the compass's needle is at rest, you can invoke its power to create an ethereal projection of a location you have visited. This projection lasts for one hour and allows those who see it to gain advantage on Intelligence checks related to navigation, cartography, or history for the duration.

However, the compass has a mind of its own. Each time you use its powers, roll a d6. On a roll of 1, the compass attempts to lead you to a completely random location instead, possibly drawing you into dangerous territories or mysterious planes of existence. Additionally, if the compass is used excessively or frivolously, it may temporarily abandon its bearer and choose to guide another character drawn to its allure.

Crafted by an ancient society of explorers, the compass resonates with the dreams of adventurers both lost and found. Be cautious in its use, as what is lost often has consequences for those unprepared to find it.
