Echoing Lantern of Lost Whispers
Wondrous Item (Lantern), rare (requires attunement)
This intricately carved lantern is made from dark wood and obsidian glass, with faintly glowing runes along its edges. When lit, it casts a soft, greenish light that flickers like a whispering flame. The air around the lantern seems to hum with shadowy echoes, and faint, unintelligible voices can be heard as it illuminates the area.
While carrying this lantern, you gain a +1 bonus to Wisdom (Perception) checks and can see in dim light as if it were bright light, and in darkness as if it were dim light, to a range of 60 feet. The lantern contains 5 charges and can be used to cast the "Detect Thoughts" spell (save DC 15) at the cost of 1 charge.
Additionally, when the lantern is lit, it slightly distorts the ambient sound, allowing you to hear whispers of nearby creatures that might be hiding or attempting to conceal their presence. As an action, you can expend 1 charge to focus the whispers into meaningful information. Choose a creature within 60 feet; you gain a brief insight into their intent or one piece of information that the creature is aware of, as if you had cast the "Insight" spell on them (the DM determines the information revealed).
If the lantern runs out of charges, it becomes a mundane object until recharged at a location of personal significance to a creature that has attuned to it, which can take a short rest. The lantern can also be recharged by successfully getting a creature to drop its guard (such as when they are surprised or unconscious) while it is lit. Doing so charges the lantern by 1d3 charges, re-activating its magic and restoring its capabilities.
Once you have used The Echoing Lantern three times in a single day, it must remain unlit until the next dawn before it can be used again.
