Cloak of Whispers and Woe
Wondrous Item (Cloak), rare (requires attunement)
This dark, flowing cloak appears to be woven from shadows themselves, shimmering with an ethereal sheen that flickers like candlelight. When draped over the shoulders, it almost seems to whisper, sharing secrets of the ages with its wearer.
While wearing this cloak, you gain a +1 bonus to AC and saving throws. Additionally, the cloak grants you darkvision out to a range of 60 feet. If you already have darkvision, the range extends by an additional 30 feet.
Once per long rest, you can activate the cloak to cast the spell Invisibility on yourself as a 2nd-level spell without expending a spell slot. The effect lasts for up to 1 hour or until you make an attack or cast a spell.
However, the cloak has a dark side. The whispers emanating from it sometimes echo the fears and regrets of its previous wearers. Each time you use the cloak's invisibility, roll a d6. On a roll of 1, you must succeed on a Wisdom saving throw (DC 15) or become frightened for 1 minute, hearing the anguished wails of lost souls. You can repeat the saving throw at the end of each of your turns, ending the effect on yourself on a success.
Additionally, the cloak gathers knowledge of those near you who have undergone great loss. If you are within 30 feet of a creature that has suffered a significant personal tragedy (as determined by the DM), you can choose to gain advantage on one ability check or saving throw made against that creature in a contested situation.
This item serves not only as a protective accessory but as a reminder of the burdens that come with power and the stories that shape even the most formidable of heroes.
