Chronicles of the Wandering Tome

Wondrous Item (Spellbook), rare (requires attunement)

This ancient, leather-bound tome appears unassuming at first glance, but its pages shimmer with a faint ethereal glow as if they hold untold secrets. When a spellcaster attunes to this book, they find that it is a nexus for knowledge and fate, filled with spells that reflect the ebb and flow of time and space.

Once per day, you can attempt to scribe a new spell into the tome from a spell scroll or a spell of your choice that you know. Roll a d20 and add your spellcasting ability modifier to the result. If the total is 15 or higher, the spell is successfully added to the tome, provided it is of a level you can learn. If the roll is below 15, the attempt fails, and the tome always fills the empty pages with misdirections, causing the caster to perceive the spell as lost to time.

In addition, while attuned to the book, your spellcasting is enhanced. You can choose one spell you have prepared or know to be transient in nature (such as Mirror Image, Misty Step, or Blink). When casting this spell, you can choose to cast it as one level higher than normal without expending a spell slot, as the tome grants you a fleeting surge of power.

However, the book harbors a mystery; if you cast a transient spell from it, roll a d6 after the spell is completed. On a roll of 1, the tome vanishes, reappearing in a random location within 500 miles. You must seek it out again, navigating potential dangers that come with recovering it, making the experience a captivating adventure.

The tome shifts slightly when another creature attempts to view its contents without permission, creating illusory barriers that obscure its pages. Only those who are attuned can decipher its knowledge on their own. The book serves as a reminder that not all knowledge is meant to be easily accessible, and that the paths of understanding are often labyrinthine and fraught with challenges.
