Chronicle of Forgotten Whispers

Wondrous Item (Scroll), rare (requires attunement)

This ancient scroll is bound in dark leather and adorned with faintly glowing runes that twist and shift as if they are alive. Ethereal whispers seem to emanate from the scroll, barely audible, as if it holds secrets long forgotten by time itself. When attuned, the scroll imbues the user with the ability to tap into the collective knowledge of the past.

Once per long rest, the wielder can spend an action to unfurl the scroll, allowing them to summon the voices of lost souls who have witnessed significant events in history. For 1 minute, the user gains advantage on Intelligence (History) checks and can ask up to three questions about historical events or locations related to the area they are currently in. The Dungeon Master will provide answers based on their discretion, influenced by how relevant the questions are to the current setting.

Additionally, the user can invoke the whispers during combat to momentarily glimpse ahead. As a bonus action, the wielder can draw on the scroll's power, granting themselves or an ally they can see within 30 feet a +2 bonus to their next attack roll or saving throw before the end of their next turn.

However, wielding such knowledge comes at a cost. After using the scroll to gain information or enhance an attack, the user must succeed on a DC 15 Wisdom saving throw or have fleeting visions—resulting in disadvantage on the next ability check they make, as they become momentarily distracted by the cacophony of voices echoing in their mind.

Should the scroll be subjected to destructive magic, or if it takes damage, it may shatter, releasing a powerful wave of chaotic energy that forces all creatures within 10 feet to make a DC 15 Constitution saving throw or take 3d6 psychic damage. Only a powerful spellcaster or a being of significant wisdom can restore this precious scroll, or it may remain in shattered silence, its whispers lost forever.
