Celestial Compass of the Lost Traveler
Wondrous Item (Artifact), rare (requires attunement)
This intricately designed compass, forged from a blend of polished silver and deep blue sapphire, draws the beholder's eye with its mesmerizing swirling designs that appear as if they are shifting stars. When held, the compass points not only in the cardinal directions but also towards the closest desired destination of the user, regardless of distance.
Once per day, the user can call upon the magic within to activate a Navigational Beacon. This effect fills a 60-foot radius around the user with soft, glowing light that lasts for one hour. Allies within the area gain advantage on Wisdom saving throws against being lost or confused, and their movement is not hindered by difficult terrain as they can find their way with ease.
In addition to guiding physical journeys, the compass holds the power to tap into the memory of your journey within the multiverse. If attuned, the user can cast Plane Shift once per long rest without requiring material components. The compass will resonate with a gentle hum, amplifying the thrill of exploration. However, should the user attempt to use this ability while in a locale they have never traveled to before, there is a 25% chance that the spell will misfire, transporting them to a chaotic or uncharted plane instead (a twist determined by the DM).
As a constant reminder of its celestial nature, the compass projects a soft, radiant glow in the presence of celestial or fiendish beings, allowing the bearer to detect such creatures within 30 feet if they are not hidden.
But be cautious; each time the compass is used to find a new destination or to cast Plane Shift, it drains a bit of its own magic. If depleted entirely, it becomes merely a beautiful but non-magical trinket, requiring the user to seek the guidance of a powerful celestial being to restore its lost powers. Keeping the compass imbued with magical energy will lead you'll lead you down the right paths, but the risks of venturing into the unknown can be perilous.
