These fractured stones and overgrown paths twist between massive tree roots, enveloped in deep shadows and covering remnants of forgotten history. Towering, moss-covered structures stand as silent witnesses to a time long gone, echoing whispers of magic that once flowed freely through the land.
At the heart of these ruins stands an imposing stone archway, adorned with intricate carvings of long-forgotten elven lore. The archway appears to shimmer with a faint, azure glow, casting an ethereal light amidst the gloom. It is rumored that the arch serves as a gateway to the ethereal realm, connecting the world of the living with a dimension teeming with arcane energy and lurking horrors. Exploring the Ruins
Upon entering the ruins, the atmosphere is thick with the weight of history. Old trees weave their roots around the crumbled remains of stone buildings, enveloping the area in a cool, muted humidity. Fateful whispers of the wind carry hints of hostility, and hidden dangers lurk in the corners of your vision.
As characters step carefully into the main courtyard, your senses heighten. Ruined structures loom over you; one stands taller than the others, with a stone door that seems ajar. Before you lies a choice: to investigate the door or further explore this fantastical surroundings.
The Decaying Door: Encountering the Shadows
If the players choose to open the door, they find a dimly lit chamber filled with a thick blanket of fog. Inside, shadows writhe and flicker, revealing the ethereal silhouette of the spirits of Elowen's ancient inhabitants. As they manifest, the players must face a swarm of Shadow Wraiths (use the Wraith stats modified for level 5).
These tormented spirits lash out with cold, life-draining attacks, preying on the unwary and siphoning life force from the living. Be mindful of your players' strategy; these wraiths will seek to isolate characters, fading into the shadows to ambush their targets. A successful DC 15 Wisdom saving throw allows the players to sense which direction the wraiths are hiding, providing an advantage for combat.

Exploring the courtyard further can reveal hidden traps. As players traverse broken tiles, they will need to make a perception check (DC 14). Those who fail will trigger a series of cascading traps:
- Digging Roots: Root-like tendrils emerge from the ground, trying to latch onto players’ feet. Players must make a DC 12 Strength saving throw to avoid being restrained for their turn.
- Polluting Mist: Activating a hidden glyph releases a poisonous gas. Characters must succeed on a DC 13 Constitution saving throw or take 2d6 poison damage and become poisoned for 1 minute.
- Illusionary Hounds: Ghostly hounds appear for a turn, snapping and snarling. Players must succeed in a DC 15 Wisdom saving throw to avoid being frightened, fleeing or hiding from the shadows for one round.
Avoiding these traps requires both patience and cooperation, as players may need to devise a strategy to navigate each hazard without alerting the next one.
The Riddle of the Ancients
As exploration continues, the players discover an ancient pedestal decorated with colorful crystals, their patterns forming a riddle etched in an archaic language. Translating the riddle (Intelligence check DC 16) reveals the following:

When the players solve the riddle, they realize that the answer is "Knowledge" (or another similar concept, depending on the campaign context). When spoken aloud, magic emanates from the pedestal and reveals a hidden path leading toward the archway itself—paving a way towards the Elowen Crystal.

Upon reaching the infamous ancient archway, players witness the dark crystal shimmering within its folds, swirling with intense energy. As they approach, the shadows within the archway coalesce into The Keeper of the Arch, a formidable creature born from the remnants of shadows and remnants of lost souls (use the Specter statistics but adjust hit points and damage output).
The Keeper informs the players that to claim the Elowen Crystal, they must fulfill a challenge: a battle against their own fears, made manifest and summoned from within. Each player must face a shadowy version of themselves, essentially acting as their worst nightmare, with tactics reflective of their character's abilities.
This battle tests the players' resolve and strategy, requiring not just physical prowess but also teamwork. If one player falls, the others must find a way to revive them, forging ahead in another attempt to face the Keeper.
Overcoming the Keeper
Defeating the Keeper requires both ingenuity and teamwork, as the creatures will adapt to the group’s strategies throughout the fight. Their shapeshifting abilities will test the players' minds and force them to evolve their tactics.
Once the Keeper has been vanquished, a vibrant pulse of energy emanates through the archway. The Elowen Crystal appears, glowing brighter than ever.
