Cloak of Whispering Shadows

Wondrous Item (Cloak), rare (requires attunement)

This ethereal cloak seems to shift and shimmer, as if woven from the fabric of shadows themselves. The material feels cool against the skin and is adorned with intricate silver embroidery that resembles swirling wisps of smoke. When worn, the cloak grants its user an aura of mystery, allowing them to blend into dimly lit environments seamlessly.

While attuned, the wearer gains the following benefits:

  • Shadow Veil: When you are in dim light or darkness, you can take the Hide action as a bonus action, even if you are only lightly obscured. If you succeed on your Dexterity (Stealth) check, you can become invisible until the start of your next turn. This ability can be used a number of times equal to your proficiency bonus, and it regains all expended uses after a long rest.

  • Whispers of the Abyss: The cloak allows you to communicate subtly with nearby creatures. As an action, you can whisper a short message (up to 25 words) to a creature within 30 feet that can hear you. The target must succeed on a Wisdom saving throw (DC = 8 + your proficiency bonus + your Charisma modifier) to understand the message. On a failed save, the creature hears only a murmur of indistinct words and cannot comprehend it. This feature can be used once per short or long rest.

  • Eldritch Evasion: Once per short rest, when you are hit by an attack, you can use your reaction to shift into shadows, granting you advantage on the next saving throw you make against a spell or magical effect.

Despite its power, the cloak has an inherent connection to darker forces. Whenever you use one of its features, roll a d20. On a roll of 1, the cloak momentarily slips from your control, and shadows swirl around you. For 1 minute, you are unable to use any of the cloak’s benefits, as whispers drown out your thoughts, though you can still wear the cloak normally.

Embrace the whispers and shadows, but beware the darkness that may come creeping in.
