Caverns of Despair: Trials of the Deepening Gloom

Setting the Scene: The Abyssal Chasm

Deep beneath the surface of the earth, a network of caverns known as the Abyssal Chasm spans for miles, a testament to the ancient power that once thrived here. The caverns are lit only by the soft, eerie glow of phosphorescent fungi clinging to the jagged walls, illuminating strange shapes and shadows that seem to dance in the darkness. Stalactites drip eerily from the ceiling, each drop echoing like a haunting reminder of time gone by.

Unbeknownst to most, the chasm is home to a powerful artifact called the Lumen Stone, said to be capable of illuminating the deepest darkness and banishing evil. However, the stone has been corrupted, drawing malevolent creatures into its vicinity, and an echo of despair now hangs heavily in the air. The party comes here seeking not only the Lumen Stone but to cleanse it, restoring balance to the chasm and its surrounding realms.

Characters

The Lamenting Guardian

An ancient protector of the Lumen Stone, now twisted by the artifact's corruption. The Guardian was once known as Elyara, a noble spirit bound to protect the light. Now, she manifests as a wraith-like figure, a mix of beauty and horror, wailing like the wind through the caverns. Her ghastly form is tethered to the Lumen Stone, and her sorrow can inflict despair upon those nearby, imposing disadvantage on fear saves.

The Umbral Wretches

These malevolent creatures are a direct consequence of the Lumen Stone's corruption. Once adventurers who dared to claim the stone, they were transformed into shadowy fiends that haunt the caverns, prowling the twisting paths in search of new prey. They can blend into the darkness, becoming nearly invisible, making them lethal ambushers who strike from the shadows.

The Goal

To retrieve and purify the Lumen Stone, the party must navigate the depths of the Abyssal Chasm, defeat the Umbral Wretches, and confront the Lamenting Guardian. Along the way, they will face a series of trials that test their wits, strength, and resolve.

The Trials of the Deepening Gloom

The Shadow Labyrinth

Upon entering the chasm, the adventurers find themselves in a vast chamber with numerous exit paths. The air is thick with an oppressive energy that numbs their senses, and the walls seem to shift and shimmer, making navigation difficult.

Puzzle Mechanics: The paths are enchanted, and the players must discern the true route to proceed. Throughout the chamber, shadows whisper to lead the players astray. To solve this, they must use their insights.

  • Wisdom DC 15: A successful check reveals that the whispers only echo when players are about to take a wrong path.
  • Intelligence DC 13: Examining the shadows reveals signs on the walls indicating the dangers of certain paths (hinting that some paths lead to dead ends or traps).

As they decipher the way, streaks of darkness will emerge—Umbral Wretches waiting to prey upon unsuspecting adventurers. The players must either engage in combat or evade detection. The battle against the Wretches could occur here, testing their combat skills against fast, shadowy attacks.

The Weeping Pools

After navigating the labyrinth, the adventurers will come across a series of crystalline pools that glisten with an unnatural hue. The water has restorative properties for the bearer of the Lumen Stone, revealing hidden memories of its past that were previously sealed. However, drinking the water comes at a cost.

Trap Mechanics: Each pool is guarded by a shimmering veil that fills the area with illusions, causing players to relive their most painful memories unless a successful Intelligence saving throw (DC 14) is made. Successful save means they see the pool for what it is, but on a failure, they must relive the moment by taking psychic damage (1d6) and imposing a disadvantage on wisdom and intelligence saving throws until the end of their next turn.

The Confrontation with Elyara

Having overcome the pools, the adventurers finally reach a towering altar where the Lumen Stone sits in ominous splendor. However, as they approach, the Lamenting Guardian, Elyara, materializes, grief pouring from her presence like fog. She mistakes the party for yet another group of thieves come to loot the stone.

Elyara launches a desperate attack to drive them away, calling on waves of dark energy that seep from the corrupted stone, causing fear and shadowy apparitions to erupt around her.

Combat Mechanics:

  • Elyara’s in Combat: She possesses unique abilities to control the battlefield, such as:

    • Wail of Despair: A 15-foot radius that imposes disadvantage on saving throws against charm and fear.
    • Shadowspawn: Summons two Umbral Wretches (utilize their stats) to assist her while she attacks.
  • Defeating Elyara: The players must reduce her health to 0, but throughout the battle, they can attempt to engage her in conversation (Charisma DC 16) to help her realize her true purpose. If successful, this offers a chance to purify the Lumen Stone through a ritual requiring the party to contribute spells of radiant nature or healing in tandem.

The Resolution: Light from Darkness

Upon either defeating Elyara or persuading her to relinquish her corruption, the Lumen Stone begins to resonate with a light that banishes the darkness of the chasm. The malignant power dissipates into sparkling motes of light, revealing the true beauty of the cavern—the phosphorescent fungi bloom brighter, and the air clears.

The adventurers feel a sense of tranquility descend upon them, granting each member a temporary boon—a +1 to saving throws until their next long rest. The Lumen Stone now shines brightly, no longer a source of despair but a beacon of hope.

As a reward, Elyara, now free of her bonds, thanks the adventurers and offers them each a unique gift from the Lumen Stone's radiance—a piece of its luminescent crystal that radiates soft light, serving as a magic item with properties granting 1 additional charge usable for spellcasting or divine spells.

With the artifact cleansed and the shadows driven away, the adventurers emerge from the Abyssal Chasm victorious, knowing they have restored light not just to the cavern but to the surrounding lands as well.
